Navigating the Mirage of Emotions: Finding Your Way Through Overwhelm

Have you ever felt a whirlwind of emotions swirling inside you all at once? Hopelessness, stress, anxiety, grief, and even frustration—it can feel like standing in the eye of a storm, unsure of where to turn or how to find calm. For many, these moments of emotional overload can make it challenging to focus, sleep, or even make sense of what’s happening. If this resonates, this blog is just for you!

Why Do We Feel So Many Emotions at Once?

Life has a way of throwing complex situations our way. Major life events—whether joyful, bittersweet, or stressful—can create a cascade of emotions. Imagine the inauguration of a new president. While some may feel hope and relief, others may experience worry or anger, all mixed with the uncertainty of what the future holds especially with dramatic changes and threats to rights.

On then on the flip side, even positive events, like a wedding or a long-awaited move, can evoke conflicting feelings of excitement and stress.

Factors like personal values, past experiences, and environmental stressors can amplify these emotional layers. When life feels overwhelming, it’s natural to question, “What’s wrong with me?” - as you experience all these emotions at once. But the truth is, nothing is wrong with you. Human emotions are complex, often coexisting in ways that defy logic.

The Art of Sitting with Emotions

In a culture that encourages fixing or moving on quickly, the idea of sitting with your emotions may feel counterintuitive. Yet, pausing to acknowledge your feelings without judgment is one of the most compassionate things you can do for yourself. This helps with flexing that emotional intelligence muscle. By practice this also allows you to tell yourself that these emotions are not good nor bad - they just are.

Here’s how to start:

  1. Name Your Emotions: Instead of pushing them aside, try naming what you feel. Are you anxious, sad, or frustrated? Sometimes, labeling your emotions helps take away their power.

  2. Breathe Through Discomfort: Deep, intentional breaths can ground you. With each exhale, remind yourself that it’s okay to feel this way.

  3. Ask Yourself What You Need: Do you need rest, connection, or even solitude? Understanding your needs can guide how you respond to these emotions.

  4. Journal Your Thoughts: Writing out your feelings can help you untangle the knots in your mind. It doesn’t have to be structured—just let the words flow.

Sorting Through Emotions

Once you’ve sat with your feelings, you can begin sorting through them. Start by identifying which emotions are tied to the present moment and which may stem from past experiences or fears about the future. Recognize that you don’t have to solve everything at once. Sorting through emotions is a process, not a one-time event.

How Therapy Can Help

A therapist can provide a safe, nonjudgmental space to help you explore and make sense of your emotions. They can guide you in developing coping strategies, identifying patterns, and gaining insight into what triggers your emotional overwhelm. Therapy is not about erasing emotions but about learning how to navigate them in a way that supports your overall well-being.

So many of our clients tell us “it is great to have a therapist who isn’t my [insert relationship]”.. why? Cause we don’t have past experiences with you where you’d feel judged by us.
